The Cone of Explanations

One of the strangest assumptions we make about time is that the past is a line and the future is a cloud.
The past feels singular because we remember only one history. The future feels open because we imagine many possibilities. But I am increasingly convinced that this intuition may be backwards.
Take any point in Pascal’s Triangle. There are many paths that can arrive at that point. In fact, the farther down you go, the more histories become compatible with the same outcome. The present moment may feel unique, but it is actually the convergence point of an enormous number of possible pasts.
The future is different. While there are many futures available, any particular future state imposes constraints on how you can get there. The future is open, but it is not arbitrary.
This suggests a different picture of reality. Instead of imagining time as a line stretching from a fixed past into an uncertain future, imagine the present as a narrow waist between two expanding structures. Behind us is an expanding cone of explanations. Ahead of us is an expanding cone of possibilities.
The past expands because there are countless histories that could produce what we see now. The future expands because there are countless ways what we see now could unfold.
The present is not a location on a timeline. It is an interface.

This has led me to wonder whether many of the things we call particles are actually shadows of deeper informational relationships. Not particles in the usual sense, but signatures of how reality navigates between memory and possibility.
A proton, for example, feels less like a moving object and more like a memory structure. It is remarkably stable. It persists. It carries constraints forward. If you were trying to describe reality in terms of information rather than matter, you might say that the proton represents accumulated historical depth. Not “the past” literally, but the tendency of the past to become organized and durable. If the past resembles an expanding cone of compatible histories, the proton feels less like a point and more like a distribution, a stable cross section through an entire region of possibility.
An electron feels different. It transfers. It connects. It mediates. It behaves less like stored memory and more like communication between states. In the same crude geometric sense, it feels closer to the tip of the cone itself: a narrow vector, a point-like direction connecting larger informational structures.
Whether that picture survives mathematics is another question entirely. But I think it points toward something important.
The deepest mistake we make may be treating the present as the thing that is real.
The present is the least informative part of reality.
What is real is the negotiation taking place through it. On one side, an immense landscape of histories compressed into a single moment. On the other, an immense landscape of possibilities waiting to be resolved.
We stand at the pinch point and call it “now.”
But now may be the narrowest part of the story.
